Great hiking and cycling countryside on the doorstep and the much larger town of Castello de Rugat is (within walking/cycling distance).
The amenities in ‘Rafol de Salem’ comprise of, a village communal swimming pool, exercise area, pharmacy, a couple of bars, hairdressers, but in the larger town of Castello de Rugat nearby you find various restaurants-bars, garage, gym, Bank, post office, hairdressers, Centro de salud- health centre, pharmacy, dentist, school (colegio), 'sports centre' and another swimming pool that is open during the summer months, plus large supermarkets and an Irish bar, in fact everything for daily living.
The local economy has traditionally been based on agriculture being mainly olive trees and vines, and the pottery industry too. Within the irrigated crop areas they grow corn, alfalfa (like hay), tobacco and vegetables, which are all harvested locally. The drier land a short distance away, being a much larger area, is mainly used for vines (for wine mainly the Rose variety) and olive trees whose oil is produced by a local cooperative. The almond trees have occupied a considerable area in the vicinity for years. Such a beautiful, lush and green area to enjoy if you love hiking with your dog, the almond blossom fills the valley in Spring and looks so amazing, there are many routes for hiking in the area and enjoying the nature and countryside.
