❤️ A Beautiful Spanish Tradition Celebrating Animals, Faith & Community

If you are an animal lover living in, or visiting, the Oliva, Gandia and La Safor area, October is a particularly special time of year.

Every year, around 4 October, communities around the world celebrate the Feast Day of San Francisco de Asís – Saint Francis of Assisi, the saint traditionally associated with animals, nature and the protection of creation.

And here in Spain, that connection is often celebrated with one of the loveliest traditions on the calendar – the Blessing of the Animals. 🐶🐱🐴🐰🕊️

It is a wonderful sight to see people arriving with their beloved pets and animals to receive a blessing, creating a colourful and very Spanish community celebration.

📅 WHY IS 4 OCTOBER SO SPECIAL?

4 October is the Feast Day of Saint Francis of Assisi, and it is also celebrated internationally as World Animal Day.

Saint Francis, who lived in Italy in the late 12th and early 13th centuries, is remembered for his deep respect for nature and all living creatures. His famous Canticle of the Creatures celebrates the natural world, including the sun, moon, water, earth and other elements of creation.

Because of this close association with animals and nature, Saint Francis became traditionally recognised as the patron saint of animals.

For centuries, churches and communities have marked his feast day by bringing animals together for a special blessing.

🐾 WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS AT A BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS?

The ceremony is generally a simple but very touching occasion.

Pet owners bring their animals along to a church, square or other outdoor area where a priest gives a special blessing.

Depending on the local tradition, you may see dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, birds and other domestic animals taking part.

The priest normally says prayers asking for God's blessing and protection for the animals and the people who care for them.

And, of course, it can make for quite a spectacle!

Imagine a Spanish square filled with excited dogs, beautifully turned-out horses, families, children and proud pet owners – all gathering together to celebrate the animals that are such an important part of their lives. ❤️

SAN FRANCISCO IN OLIVA – OCTOBER 2026

Oliva has a particularly strong connection with San Francisco de Asís, with the town celebrating its annual Fiestas de Sant Francesc d'Assís.

The feast day of the town's patron saint is on Sunday 4 October,

This year's celebrations are especially significant because 2026 marks 800 years since the death, or “Tránsito”, of Saint Francis of Assisi.

The programme includes religious and cultural events, exhibitions, concerts, a traditional street procession, the proclamation ceremony, the transfer of the image of Santa Clara, parish activities and the major celebrations surrounding the feast day.

🕊️ Sunday 4 October 2026

The big day in Oliva will be Sunday 4 October, when the town celebrates the feast of its patron saint.

The published programme includes:

⛪ Solemn Eucharist

🚶 Traditional procession

🎆 Fireworks to bring the celebrations to a spectacular close

The celebrations are centred around the Parroquia de Sant Francesc d'Assís and the local neighbourhood, with the wider town joining in the festivities.

🐾 And what about the animal blessing?

This is where it is important to distinguish between the two local traditions.

Although 4 October is the traditional date for animal blessings connected with Saint Francis, I have not found the published 2026 Oliva programme that specifically confirms an animal blessing as part of the October celebrations.

Oliva does, however, have a very well-established animal blessing tradition connected with San Antonio Abad, and the 2026 ceremony was held last on Sunday 18 January 2026.

That celebration included a procession accompanied by animals, traditional music, a solemn Mass and the distribution of blessed bread, followed at 12:15pm by the Blessing of the Animals on Calle Sant Vicent.

So if you are hoping to take your four-legged friend along to a specific blessing in Oliva, it is worth checking locally with the local Town Hall / Ayuntamiento for any additional October event that may be announced separately.

🐴 THE JANUARY TRADITION – SAN ANTONIO IN OLIVA

For animal lovers, the January Sant Antoni celebrations are also a wonderful local tradition.

In January 2026, the day began with hot chocolate for visitors in Plaça de Ganguis, while a popular breakfast was held for carters and horse riders.

At 11:00am, Mass was celebrated at the Ermita de Sant Antoni, followed by the distribution of blessed bread.

At midday, the procession of San Antonio travelled through the streets of the area, accompanied by traditional tabal and dolçaina music and animals.

Then, at 12:15pm, the actual Blessing of the Animals took place on Calle Sant Vicent. 🐕🐎🐈

It is a wonderful example of how religious tradition, local culture, animals, music and community life all come together in this part of Valencia.

🌿 WHY SAN FRANCISCO IS SO CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH ANIMALS

Saint Francis' connection with animals is much more than simply a modern pet tradition.

He is remembered for his belief in living in harmony with nature and for his respect for all living creatures.

That philosophy is one reason his feast day has become so closely connected with animal welfare, appreciation of nature and our responsibility towards the creatures with whom we share the planet.

Today, animal blessings are held in many countries, with some communities choosing 4 October, while others celebrate animal blessings around the feast of San Antonio Abad on 17 January.

Here in the Valencian Community, both traditions can be found.

🐶 A LOVELY DAY OUT FOR ANIMAL LOVERS

Even if you don't have a pet yourself, these celebrations can be fascinating to watch.

They offer a glimpse into the traditional Spanish way of life and the importance of community celebrations in towns and villages throughout the Valencian Community.

And for those of us who regard our pets as part of the family, there is something particularly heart-warming about seeing an entire community come together to celebrate them. ❤️

Whether it is a tiny Chihuahua, a very enthusiastic Labrador, a beautiful horse or even a much-loved rabbit, the Blessing of the Animals is a lovely reminder of just how much joy animals bring into our lives.

LIVING THE SPANISH LIFESTYLE

One of the things we love about living in the Oliva, Gandia and La Safor area is discovering these wonderful local traditions.

From the big fiestas and colourful processions to small community celebrations, markets, religious festivals and events involving animals, there is nearly always something happening throughout the year.

And these are exactly the sorts of occasions that allow you to experience the real Spain – beyond the beaches and sunshine! ☀️🇪🇸

So, if you are living locally, visiting on holiday, or thinking about making the move to this beautiful part of Spain, keep an eye on the local calendars.

You never know when you might find yourself watching a procession, enjoying a village fiesta – or standing in a Spanish square surrounded by dogs, horses and their very proud owners! 🐾❤️
